Local communities are rightfully employed during the construction of new mining projects in South Africa. For Anglo Americans, one of the main challenges was the increasingly technical roles to be filled by persons with limited work experience. The company did not have the luxury of time to invest in cultivating a safety culture. They required an effective on-boarding program for contract workers and a campaign to create a reporting culture.
